Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a type of short-term therapy that is much shorter than traditional psychotherapy. It is meant to be used for a set number of sessions, usually up to 16. Sessions are typically scheduled once a week so that you have time to work on the actionable goals you set during each session. Every therapist approaches SFBT differently, but in my experience, each session lasts about 30 minutes which is shorter than Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy sessions.

Limitations of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy


The primary limitation of SFBT is the fact that it’s a short-term solution to major life problems in your current situation. It is not like CBT which uses long-term treatment for deep-seated mental illnesses that require more time to work through. Because of this, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy has been criticized for overlooking those deeper problems that should be addressed before or simultaneously as the issues being addressed by SFBT.
